NamesCon and CloudFest USA 2025 to be held in Miami

The European Commission (EC) has started accepting expert applications for membership of the Multi-Stakeholder Advisory Group (MAG) on the management of the .eu top-level domain (TLD).

Management and Importance of the .eu Domain Name

The .eu domain name is operated under a contract with the European Commission, unlike other country code top-level domains (ccTLDs). Although the management principles are directly determined by the European Commission, operational processes are similar to other ccTLDs. From time to time, regulations and demands from Brussels create certain challenges for the domain name industry, but the .eu TLD continues to be a successful system with approximately 3 million registered domain names (DUMs).

In this context, the call for MAG membership represents an important opportunity for professionals interested in domain name governance.

MAG's Mandate and Powers

MAG is a multi-stakeholder group consisting of representatives from government, civil society, business, and other sectors. Members of the group are responsible for advising the European Commission on strategic issues related to the management of the .eu domain name. The MAG’s mandate is broad and includes the following areas:

  • Advising the European Commission on the implementation of EU Regulation 2019/517,
  • Providing opinions on strategic issues related to the management, organization, and administration of the .eu TLD,
  • Making recommendations on how revenues from the .eu TLD should be invested in areas such as cybersecurity, data protection, and internet governance,
  • Evaluating the processes related to the supervision and monitoring of the Registry in accordance with Article 10 of Regulation 2019/517,
  • Identifying best practices for policies and measures to combat malicious domain name registrations.

Application Process and Requirements

The European Commission's call for experts to join the MAG has a deadline of January 7, 2025.

Here are some important points to note during the application process:

  • The assignments are not remunerated, but certain expenses will be covered in accordance with the European Commission's guidelines.
  • CV submission is required for the evaluation of applications, and the process is subject to specific rules.
  • Full application details and the official call for applications are available in the documents published by the European Commission.

Interested experts can contribute to the process of shaping the future of the .eu domain name by applying for MAG membership.
